What is Medicare?

To be covered by Medicare, a treatment must be assessed by the Medical Services Advisory Committee (MSAC) and found to be clinically and cost effective compared to an existing treatment.

A formal targeted public consultation is held at the start of the MSAC process for an application, but all consumers are able to provide comments on an application at any time throughout the MSAC process. These comments are given to MSAC and its sub-committees when the application is considered.

Applications being considered by MSAC are published about four weeks before each of its meetings.

While we’re building tools to support input into MSAC, you can find more information by following this link, including a place to sign up for updates in the right-hand column.
